Summer Projects with AI: Turning Your Child's "Why?" Into a Research Question

Short answer: If your child uses AI for a summer research project, use it to find and sharpen questions — not to produce answers. Topic-hunting and framing the question can involve AI; the observing, testing, and writing-up must be your child’s own. Hold that line and AI doesn’t make the project a cheat. It makes it a reason to take your child’s “why?” seriously.
Every August, the same conversation happens in a lot of homes. “What’s your project going to be about?” “I don’t know yet.”
The hard part of a summer project is never the craft or the experiment. It’s that the child has to work out what they want to find out. Adults can’t write a research paper without a question either.
Here’s a four-step way through it — and an honest line about how far AI should go.
Why “pick any topic” doesn’t work
“Anything you like! Just choose something interesting.”
That well-meant sentence is the thing that most reliably stalls a child. Too much choice makes choosing impossible.
Meanwhile, children ask why constantly. Why don’t clouds fall? How do ants find their way home? Why does ice float? The seeds of a good topic are already there, scattered through ordinary days.
The problem is that those questions evaporate the moment they’re spoken. Nobody writes them down. By the time everyone is sitting at the table in late August trying to remember one, they’re gone.
Step 1: Collect the “whys” (3 days to a week)
Don’t start by choosing a topic. Start by writing questions down.
Stick a sheet of paper on the fridge. Every time your child asks something, add a line. Don’t judge whether it’s a good question — “why does curry taste better the next day?” is a perfectly real seed.
This is exactly where a conversation with an AI helps. When a child asks an AI something, they don’t just get an answer — they usually get a second question.
Child: “Why do cicadas only sing in summer?” AI: “Cicadas spend years underground before coming up in summer. Only the males sing — they’re calling to the females.” Child: “Wait, years underground? What are they doing down there?”
That second question is the project. The first one was only the door.
Three days of this and you’ll have fifteen or twenty questions on the fridge. At that point “we don’t have a topic” is no longer true.
Step 2: Turn a question into something testable
Look at the list together and pick one. The test is simple: can you check it with your own eyes and hands?
- “Why is the sky blue?” → Real, but hard to verify at home. Better as a reading project.
- “What makes ice melt faster?” → You can test this in a kitchen.
- “What kinds of ants live near our house?” → You can go outside and look.
Here, the useful thing to ask an AI is not the answer but how to set up the comparison.
“I want to find out what makes ice melt faster. How should I compare?”
You’ll get back ideas about using equal-sized ice cubes, changing where you put them, timing it. That’s method, not findings — and learning method from someone is not cheating. It’s what a teacher does when they explain how an experiment works.
For younger children, a parent can ask this part on their behalf. What matters is that the question belongs to the child.
Step 3: Check it yourself (no AI here)
This is the heart of the project, and the part where AI plays no role at all.
Line up the ice and time it. Follow the ants. Photograph the morning glory at the same hour each day. That patient, slightly boring work is the research, and nothing can stand in for it.
Three notes on record-keeping:
- Always write the date and time. It’s what makes the record mean something later.
- Write the prediction first. “I think the one in the sun melts faster.” A wrong prediction is the most interesting outcome available.
- Keep a photo or a drawing. Far more useful at write-up time than text alone.
Please don’t let a wrong prediction feel like failure. “It wasn’t what I expected” is the best moment in any piece of research.
Step 4: Write it up in the child’s own words
There is exactly one good use for AI at this stage: checking words your child doesn’t know, after they’ve written their own draft.
“What does ‘evaporate’ mean?” “Is there another way to say ‘compare’?” Those questions grow vocabulary.
What not to do is obvious: asking an AI to write the summary. That empties the project out.
The point of a summer project isn’t to hand in an impressive artifact. It’s to go once, end to end, through asking your own question, checking it yourself, and explaining it in your own words. Give that away and all that’s left is paper.

Honestly: it depends how.

The line is clearer than people expect. AI is fine before the thinking and after the thinking. The thinking itself belongs to the child.
There’s no need to hide it, either. A child who can write “I talked to an AI while choosing my topic” understands their tools better than one who pretends otherwise. If you’re unsure how your child’s school sees it, ask the teacher once and you’ll know.
Notes by age
Ages 2–5 (no formal project yet) Skip the write-up entirely. Pick one “why,” take a few photos, glue them to a sheet of paper. At this age, discovering that finding out is fun is the whole objective.
Ages 6–8 Observation projects work best. Plants, insects, weather, the length of a shadow. Recording the same thing at the same time each day is enough structure. Short sentences are fine.
Ages 9–10 and up Comparison experiments become possible: change exactly one thing and see what happens. Once that idea lands, science gets much more interesting. Prediction / method / result / conclusion is a format children can hold at this age.

Whether a summer project goes well has very little to do with how impressive the topic is. It depends on whether the question actually belongs to the child.
